About Gold foil - uncoated paper

Gold foiled labels are hot-foiled onto our uncoated, bright white, FSC certified wood-free paper. Rather than being printed, your design is stamped in a single metallic gold foil that catches the light with a true metal shine, giving a finish that printing alone cannot match. It suits premium packaging, wine and spirits, chocolates, candles, wedding and event stationery and product seals.

Foiling is a single-colour process: the foil replaces black in your artwork, so design in black on white and the black areas become gold. It cannot be combined with printed colour on the same label. Fine lines and small type foil well, but very large solid areas can show slight texture. The paper surface can be written on with a ballpoint pen, and the labels come on sheets with an easy-peel kraft liner.

The adhesive is a permanent water-based acrylic, the same stock we use for chilled food labelling. Paper is for indoor use and is not waterproof.

Description

Custom foiled labels & stickers, printed on premium paper with real metallic foil

Luxury foiled labels printed in the UK on uncoated woodfree paper and finished with genuine metallic gold or silver foil, supplied on easy-peel SRA4 sheets in custom sizes and shapes, from a single label upwards.

Foiling is a specialist process that adds real shine to a label rather than printing a shiny colour. Your artwork runs through a state-of-the-art hot-foiling machine, which presses a single metallic foil onto smooth white paper - the sort of high-end finish you see on wedding stationery, spirits and premium packaging.

Design your artwork in black and white, with white as the background, and we foil the black areas of the design. Gold and silver are the most popular choices, and there’s a wide range of foil colours to pick from online, so your custom foiled labels match the branding you already use.

Printed on an environmentally friendly, wood-free 70gsm paper from sustainable European forests, these personalised labels have a bright, smooth surface that can be written on with a ballpoint pen. If foil isn’t quite the effect you’re after, take a look at our metallic labels range instead.

Our print guarantee

We print exactly what you approve, matched as closely as we can to your on-screen proof - with a natural tolerance for colour and material differences.

What we guarantee

  • Colour reproduced as closely as possible to your approved proof
  • Sharp, high-quality printing and clean, accurate cutting
  • Any printing, cutting or material fault is on us - we’ll put it right or reprint free

What’s down to you

  • Spelling, wording and layout in your artwork
  • Setting up white ink and clear areas correctly for your design
  • We can’t improve low-quality graphics - upload poor resolution and it will print at poor resolution
  • We print your design exactly as approved, so please check your proof carefully

By approving your proof you accept the following. Colour is reproduced as accurately as possible but cannot be guaranteed to match your screen, a printed sample or a previous order exactly. Differences between rich (full-colour) black and single black, colours sitting near the edge of the CMYK gamut, fine tints and slight variation between materials, finishes and print batches are a normal part of the printing process and may not be visible on your on-screen proof. These are considered within standard commercial print tolerance and are not classed as a fault. Where any question of print quality arises, StickyThings is the final arbiter of whether a job has printed correctly.

Frequently asked questions

How do foiled labels work?

We foil a single metallic colour onto white paper - it can’t be combined with other printed colours. You design your artwork in black and white with white as the background, and we foil the black areas of the design. It’s a specialist finish rather than a standard full-colour print.

What foil colours can I have?

Metallic gold and silver are the most popular, and there’s a wide choice of other foil colours available to select online. Each label uses one foil colour, applied to the black parts of your artwork.

What material and adhesive are they made from?

An uncoated, acid-free wood-free 70gsm paper from sustainable European forests, on an easy-peel kraft backing. Choose permanent adhesive for long-term product labelling, or removable for temporary promotional use on smooth surfaces for up to around six months.

Are foiled labels food safe?

Yes. The paper and adhesive are approved for direct contact with dry and moist non-fatty foods, and conform to EN71-3 toy safety and packaging regulations. They’re also chill grade for chilled food labelling.

Can I order custom shapes and just a few labels?

You can. Round, oval, square, rectangle and bespoke die-cut shapes are all available in your chosen size, and the lowest order is a single label. Unsure which material suits your job? Order a free sample first.

How quickly will I get my foiled labels?

Foiling involves extra processes, so allow roughly a week from artwork approval. For our current production and delivery times, please see our turnaround and delivery page.

Can I combine foil with printed colour on the same label?

No. Foiling is a single-colour process on plain white paper; the foil goes exactly where your artwork is black and the rest stays white. For a metallic look with full-colour print, use our satin or polished metallic vinyl labels.

Which foil colours do you offer?

Gold, silver, copper and rose gold, one foil per label design. Gold and silver are the most popular; copper suits kraft and earthy branding and rose gold is a favourite for beauty and weddings.

Foiling guide

How hot foil works, and how to design for it

Foiling is the one finish we offer that is not printed. A heated die presses a thin metallic film onto the paper, and the foil stays only where the artwork is. The result is real metal shine that no ink can imitate, and a process with its own rules: one colour, black-and-white artwork, and a margin around the edge. Get those right and the labels look like they came off a stationer's press.

The process

Your artwork is made into a foiling plate. The plate is heated and pressed onto a roll of metallic foil laid over our 70 gsm uncoated white paper; where the plate touches, the foil bonds to the paper and everywhere else it lifts away clean. The labels are then kiss-cut to shape on the sheet. Because a plate has to be made and each colour is a separate pass, foiled labels take a little longer than printed ones: allow around a week from proof approval.

Four foils

  • Gold. The classic. Warm and bright on white paper; the default for wine, spirits, chocolates and wedding stationery.
  • Silver. A true mirror silver, cooler and more modern. Suits cosmetics, minimalist packaging and anything with a monochrome brand.
  • Copper. A warm, rose-toned metal that sits well with kraft, cream and earthy branding: artisan food, candles, coffee.
  • Rose gold. A soft pink-gold favoured for beauty, weddings and gifts.

One foil per label design. If you want gold on one label and silver on another, order them as two designs.

Correct positive artwork for foiling compared with negative artwork that cannot be foiled MAISON MAISON Black on white: foils White on black: no Dotted line: keep all foil at least 2 mm inside the cut
Design in pure black on white. The black becomes foil, the white is the paper. A reversed design would need the whole label foiled, which is not a process we run.

Artwork rules for foil

  1. Black and white only

Pure black (100% K) where you want foil, white everywhere else. No greys, tints, gradients or colour: foil is either there or it is not.

  2. Positive image

Black logo or text on a white background. A white design on a black background cannot be foiled.

  3. 2 mm margin

Keep every foiled element at least 2 mm inside the cut line. Foil cannot bleed off the edge.

  4. Avoid large solids

Big blocks of foil can show tiny pinholes and uneven pressure. Outlines, type and detailed marks foil beautifully; a solid 50 mm square does not.

  5. Minimum weights

Strokes of 0.75pt or more and type of 7pt or more. Very fine hairlines and delicate serifs can break up or fill in.

  6. Vector if you can

A vector PDF gives a clean plate edge. A high-resolution black-and-white PNG works if the edges are crisp, not anti-aliased grey.

Foil, metallic vinyl or printed metallic?

Three ways to get a metallic look, and they suit different jobs. The wrong choice is the commonest reason a "gold label" disappoints.

OptionHow it looksFull colour too?WaterproofBest for
Hot foil on paper (this product)True metal shine in one colour, on a natural matt paperNo, foil onlyIndoor, dryWine and spirits in dry storage, chocolates, candles, stationery, seals
Satin or mirror metallic vinylThe whole label is metallic; your design prints on topYesYesCosmetics, drinks that get chilled, anything outdoors or handled wet
Printed metallic colour on white vinylA gold or silver tone, no real shineYesYesBudget option when colour matters more than sparkle
Paper, so keep it dry

Foiled labels are on uncoated paper with a permanent water-based adhesive. They are made for boxes, jars in a cupboard, bottles on a shelf and stationery. A bottle that goes in an ice bucket, or a candle jar wiped down weekly, wants the metallic vinyl instead.

Where foil earns its place

  • Wine, gin and spirits sold and stored dry: a foiled monogram or crest on a white or cream label is the traditional look.
  • Chocolates, confectionery and hampers: foil seals on boxes and ribbon, small round logo labels on cellophane.
  • Candles and home fragrance: foiled scent names on the box and a small logo on the lid.
  • Wedding and event stationery: envelope seals, favour labels and place stickers in gold or rose gold, matching the printed suite.
  • Cosmetics and boutique packaging: silver or rose gold logos on outer boxes and tissue seals.
  • Certificates and seals: a foiled round seal reads as official in a way print does not.

The paper takes a ballpoint, so a foiled label with a blank area can carry a hand-written name, date or message, which is why so many of these end up on gifts.
