About Clear Static Cling Vinyl

Static cling is a 170 micron clear gloss PVC film with no adhesive at all. Pressed flat onto clean glass it holds by close surface contact, so it lifts off in seconds, leaves nothing to clean and can be moved or reused as often as you like. It is the usual choice for parking permits, membership and club stickers, dealer marks, opening hours and short promotions in a shop window.

It belongs on the inside of the glass, where rain, dirt and fingers cannot get behind it. We print your design in mirror image on the side that touches the glass, so it reads the right way round from outside and the film itself protects the print. You design it the normal way round and we do the mirroring.

Because the film is clear, colours printed on it are see-through and take on whatever is behind the glass. Add white ink behind your design when you want solid, bright colour, and leave areas unprinted where you want the glass to show. White ink is not completely opaque, so very dark backgrounds can show through slightly.

Static cling needs a smooth, clean surface: glass, mirrors and smooth bare metal. It will not hold on textured, dusty or greasy surfaces, and it is not a substitute for an adhesive label on the outside of a window. For larger stickers, mist the glass with water and a drop of washing-up liquid, float the sticker into place and smooth the water out from the centre. For a sticker that has to stay outside or be difficult to remove, choose an adhesive clear or white vinyl.

Description

Custom window stickers, printed on clear or white static-cling PVC

Custom window stickers printed in the UK on 170-micron clear PVC that clings by static alone - no adhesive, no residue. Reverse-printed in mirror image to read from outside the glass, full colour, any size or shape.

Our printed window stickers hold on using static cling rather than glue, so they press flat onto clean glass and smooth metal and stay put for years, yet lift away in seconds with nothing left behind. Reposition them as often as you like without losing grip.

Because the clear PVC is reverse-printed in mirror image, you fit the sticker inside the glass with the blank side facing out and your artwork reads correctly to people on the street. That keeps the print protected from rain, hands and cleaning, ideal for shopfronts and car windows.

Add opening hours, promotions, branding or a car park permit in full colour, and we cut each one to your exact size and shape. Order a single sticker or a run of hundreds, design online or upload print-ready artwork, and request a free sample first if you want to test the material.

Choose clear film when you want the glass to show around your design, with optional white ink behind the colours, or white film for a solid background.

No-glue static cling

Holds on smooth glass and metal by static alone, so window stickers reposition freely and peel off clean with no sticky residue.

Reads from outside

Reverse-printed in mirror image on clear PVC, so applied inside the glass your artwork faces out and reads the right way round.

Built to last

Tough 170-micron clear PVC rated roughly two years outdoors and up to five years inside, through frost, damp and summer heat.

Any size or shape

Rectangle, circle, oval or a custom die-cut cut to your measurements, printed full colour in a glossy finish, from one upwards.

Our print guarantee

We print exactly what you approve, matched as closely as we can to your on-screen proof - with a natural tolerance for colour and material differences.

What we guarantee

  • Colour reproduced as closely as possible to your approved proof
  • Sharp, high-quality printing and clean, accurate cutting
  • Any printing, cutting or material fault is on us - we’ll put it right or reprint free

What’s down to you

  • Spelling, wording and layout in your artwork
  • Setting up white ink and clear areas correctly for your design
  • We can’t improve low-quality graphics - upload poor resolution and it will print at poor resolution
  • We print your design exactly as approved, so please check your proof carefully

By approving your proof you accept the following. Colour is reproduced as accurately as possible but cannot be guaranteed to match your screen, a printed sample or a previous order exactly. Differences between rich (full-colour) black and single black, colours sitting near the edge of the CMYK gamut, fine tints and slight variation between materials, finishes and print batches are a normal part of the printing process and may not be visible on your on-screen proof. These are considered within standard commercial print tolerance and are not classed as a fault. Where any question of print quality arises, StickyThings is the final arbiter of whether a job has printed correctly.

Frequently asked questions

How do window stickers stay on without adhesive?

They use static cling. The 170-micron clear PVC grips clean glass and smooth metals by static attraction alone, so there is no glue and no residue. A light mist of water helps you slide out air bubbles and settle the sticker for a long, flat hold.

Why are they printed in mirror image?

So they read correctly when applied inside the glass. We reverse-print on the back of the clear PVC, you stick the unprinted side to the inside of the window, and your artwork faces outward the right way round while the print stays protected from the weather.

How long do window stickers last?

Fitted inside the glass, where the print is shielded from rain and cleaning, expect up to five years of service. If you need a permanent stick-down option, look at our clear waterproof labels instead.

Will they leave marks or come off in the cold?

No marks - static cling lifts away cleanly whenever you want. The PVC handles service temperatures from -20°C up to +50°C, though for a first application we advise fitting at 10°C or above so the material sits flat against the glass.

Can I order custom sizes, shapes and just one?

Yes. Enter any width and height, or supply a vector cutter guide for a bespoke shape, and we cut each window sticker to match. There is no minimum - order a single sticker or several hundred, supplied on sheets or individually.

How quickly will I get my window stickers?

Once you approve the PDF proof we email you, we get straight to print. For our current production and delivery times, please see our turnaround and delivery page.

How does a static cling window sticker stay on with no adhesive?

The 170 micron PVC clings to smooth glass by close surface contact: pressed flat, it excludes the air behind it and the two smooth surfaces hold. That is why it needs clean, smooth glass, goes on the inside, lifts off without residue and can be repositioned.

Can I use a static cling sticker on the outside of a window?

No. Rain and dirt get behind the film and break the contact. Static cling is for the inside of glass, printed in mirror image so it reads from outside. For graphics on the outside, or on any other surface, use an adhesive clear or white vinyl label.

Window stickers guide

Static cling: how a sticker holds on with no glue

Our window stickers have no adhesive at all. They are cut from a 170 micron clear PVC that clings to glass by close surface contact: press it flat and the film excludes the air behind it, and the smoothness of the two surfaces holds it there. That is why it lifts off in seconds with nothing to clean, can be moved as often as you like, and stays put for years on a shop window or a car windscreen. It also explains everything about how to use it. This guide covers the inside-the-glass rule, mirrored printing, design for readability through glass, and the jobs it does best.

Inside the glass, reading out

Static cling works on the inside of the glass, where it is protected from rain, dirt and fingers. The design is therefore printed in mirror image on the side that touches the glass, so it reads correctly to someone outside, and the clear film protects the print from the room. We handle the mirroring; you design it the right way round.

What it needs

  • Smooth, clean glass or acrylic. Any dust or smear sits between the film and the glass as a bubble or a spot.
  • Flat or gently curved. A windscreen is fine; a tightly curved bottle is not.
  • Not textured or frosted glass, and not tinted film that is already on the glass unless it is perfectly smooth.

What it does not do

It does not go on the outside. Rain gets behind it, dirt breaks the contact and it lifts. For a graphic on the outside of glass, or on any surface other than glass, use an adhesive clear vinyl or white vinyl label.

Applied inside the window. The print faces the glass and is protected by the clear film behind it; from the pavement it reads the right way round.

Designing to be read through glass

  1. Give it a background

Print on a white or solid-colour panel, not on the clear film alone. A design left clear competes with reflections and whatever is inside the shop.

  2. Size for the distance

About 25 mm of letter height per 3 metres of reading distance. Opening hours read from the pavement need 15 mm type; a logo read from across the road needs 100 mm or more.

  3. Contrast beats colour

Dark on light or light on dark. Tinted and reflective glass eats mid-tones, so avoid grey text and pale colours.

  4. Keep 10 mm clear at the edge

A margin of unprinted film helps it seat flat and gives you something to grip when repositioning.

  5. One message per sticker

Hours on one, offers on another, payment logos on a third. Small separate stickers are easier to update than one large panel.

  6. Round the corners

Corners are where a cling film starts to lift; a 5 mm radius or a circle holds best.

Applying and moving it

  1. Clean the glass

Glass cleaner, then a dry lint-free cloth. Cold glass is fine; wet glass is not, except when wet-applying a large piece.

  2. Peel from the backing

The sticker comes on a liner. Peel it off, keeping the printed side towards the glass.

  3. Position and press

Lay it on the glass and smooth from the centre outwards with a flat hand or a soft cloth to push the air out. Bubbles you cannot chase out will usually clear in a day.

  4. Large pieces: go wet

For anything over about 200 mm, mist the glass with water and a drop of washing-up liquid, float the sticker on, squeegee the water out from the centre. It clings as it dries.

  5. To move or remove

Lift a corner and peel. Nothing is left behind. Store on the original liner or a sheet of greaseproof paper, flat, and it can be reused.

Cars and cold weather

Static cling is the standard for parking permits, membership stickers and dealer marks on car windscreens because it survives heat, frost and years of sun and comes off without a trace at resale. Apply to the inside of the glass on a dry day; once seated, temperature swings do not affect it.
