About Silver Mirror Vinyl - Permanent

Polished silver is a 65 micron metallised PVC with a bright chrome-like mirror surface. It is our most reflective silver and suits premium packaging, seals, awards, appliance badges and anywhere a chrome effect is wanted at label prices. Waterproof and scratch resistant, the unprinted film is rated for around five years outdoors.

Because the inks are slightly translucent, colour printed straight onto the mirror finish takes on a metallic shimmer, which is often the whole point. For bright, opaque colour, choose white ink under your artwork in the designer and the white is printed first as a base. Unprinted areas remain mirror silver.

The adhesive is a permanent pressure-sensitive acrylic that bonds well to glass, coated card, metal and smooth containers. It is not designed for low-energy plastics such as ABS or polypropylene, and it applies best at room temperature.

Description

Custom silver labels & stickers, printed on polished metallic film

Polished silver metallic labels printed in the UK on 65-micron metallised PVC, supplied on easy-peel sheets with a bright, mirror-like finish and a permanent waterproof adhesive. Full-colour print, any size or shape, from a single label upwards.

Our polished silver labels carry a genuine reflective metal look that is easily mistaken for far more expensive engraved plaques. Printed on metallised PVC rather than paper, they hold that high-class shine on cosmetics, spirit bottles, gifts and branding without costing a fortune.

The CMYK inks we use are slightly translucent, so you get a choice: overlay your colours straight onto the silver for a subtle metallic sheen, or add a white under-base first for print that is as vibrant as it would be on paper. Mono designs and solid blocks of colour both look striking on the bright silver base.

Every order is cut to your exact measurements, in any shape you need, from one label upwards. If you would prefer a softer, less reflective look, our satin silver labels use the same material family - and free samples are on hand if you want to test the finish first.

Our print guarantee

We print exactly what you approve, matched as closely as we can to your on-screen proof - with a natural tolerance for colour and material differences.

What we guarantee

  • Colour reproduced as closely as possible to your approved proof
  • Sharp, high-quality printing and clean, accurate cutting
  • Any printing, cutting or material fault is on us - we’ll put it right or reprint free

What’s down to you

  • Spelling, wording and layout in your artwork
  • Setting up white ink and clear areas correctly for your design
  • We can’t improve low-quality graphics - upload poor resolution and it will print at poor resolution
  • We print your design exactly as approved, so please check your proof carefully

By approving your proof you accept the following. Colour is reproduced as accurately as possible but cannot be guaranteed to match your screen, a printed sample or a previous order exactly. Differences between rich (full-colour) black and single black, colours sitting near the edge of the CMYK gamut, fine tints and slight variation between materials, finishes and print batches are a normal part of the printing process and may not be visible on your on-screen proof. These are considered within standard commercial print tolerance and are not classed as a fault. Where any question of print quality arises, StickyThings is the final arbiter of whether a job has printed correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Are these silver labels waterproof?

Yes. They are printed on metallised PVC with eco-solvent inks and a permanent waterproof adhesive, so they will not smudge when wet and can be used both indoors and outdoors. The reverse of the material is bright metallic silver too.

How do the printed colours look on the silver material?

Our CMYK inks are slightly translucent. Printed straight onto the silver they take on a metallic sheen with a slightly duller look, or we can lay down a white under-base first so the colours print as vibrant as they would on paper. Mono and solid-colour designs look especially smart.

What surfaces will the adhesive stick to?

The permanent solvent-based acrylic adhesive bonds to all smooth surfaces such as glass, metal and most rigid plastics. It will not hold well on low energy plastics like car bumpers and ABS, so order a free sample to test if you are unsure.

What is the difference between polished and satin silver?

Polished silver is our brightest, most reflective mirror-like finish. Satin silver uses a similar material but is less shiny and reflective, for a more understated metallic look. If you cannot decide, our free sample service lets you compare both in person.

What is the minimum order and can I have custom shapes?

Just one label. Enter any width and height for a standard shape, or supply a vector cutter guide for a bespoke die-cut, and we will cut your silver labels to spec. There are no set-up fees and you can mix designs in a single run.

How quickly will I get my silver labels?

Once you approve the PDF proof we get straight to print, with all polished material held in stock. For our current production and delivery times, please see our turnaround and delivery page.

Why do my colours look different on polished silver?

The inks are translucent, so a colour printed straight onto the mirror becomes a metallic tint of itself and white in the artwork comes out as bare silver. To get a colour exactly as designed, mark that element for a white ink underbase; the white prints first and the colour sits on it opaque.

Can I have silver lettering on a polished silver label?

Yes, and it costs nothing: leave the letters unprinted and print the colour around them, so the mirror shows through as the type. Knocking the brand out to bare silver on a dark tinted panel is the classic polished silver layout.

Designer's guide

Printing on a mirror: how colour behaves on polished silver and how to design for it

Polished silver is the one label material where the design changes when it is printed. Our inks are translucent, so every colour laid on the mirror becomes a metallic tint of itself, the white in your artwork disappears unless it is printed as white ink, and a large flat fill shows the finish beneath it. Designers who know this get labels that look like chromed badges; those who do not get a surprise on the proof. This guide covers the colour behaviour, the white ink underbase, the layouts that suit a mirror finish, and where polished silver earns its place.

Three ways a colour can sit on silver

  1. Colour straight onto the mirror

The ink tints the reflection: a red becomes a metallic red, a blue a chromed blue, a mid-grey a darker silver. Rich, reflective, and it changes with the angle of the light. Best for badges, crests and single-colour logos.

  2. Colour over a white ink underbase

White ink is printed first, then the colour on top, so it reads as it would on a white label: opaque, matt-ish and exactly to the CMYK value. Use it for skin tones, photographs, brand colours that must match, and any text that has to read from a distance.

  3. Nothing printed

The bare mirror. The most important part of the design is often what you leave unprinted: a silver panel behind the brand, a silver rule, silver lettering knocked out of a printed colour.

You can mix all three on one label, and the online designer lets you mark which elements get the white underbase.

Six swatches showing the same colours printed straight onto polished silver and over a white ink underbase Straight onto the mirror Over white ink ASHCOMBE metallic tints; white areas are silver unprinted = mirror ASHCOMBE opaque, true to the CMYK values white ink printed first, colour on top Same file, two results. Most polished silver labels use both on one design.
Left: colours tint the mirror and read as metallic. Right: the same colours over a white ink underbase read as printed colour. The unprinted silver does the rest.

Designing for a mirror finish

  • Make silver the design

Knock the brand out of a printed panel so the letters are bare mirror, or run the logo in silver on a dark printed ground. Silver as an ink effect costs nothing here; it is the material.

  • Dark text, white underbase for small type

Body text below 8 pt on bare mirror is hard to read at some angles; give small text a white underbase or set it in a dark colour on an underbased panel.

  • Avoid large pale fills without underbase

A pastel over mirror becomes a barely-there tint; put white behind it or embrace the tint and go darker.

  • No printed white, no printed grey

White in artwork is not printed unless marked as white ink; it comes out as mirror. Greys are printed as translucent black and darken the silver. Decide which you want.

  • Fingerprints and glare

A mirror shows marks and reflects light sources. Add the laminate for handled products, and photograph labels under diffuse light.

  • Keep the edge simple

Rectangles with rounded corners, ovals and circles read as engraved plates; complex die cuts on mirror look busy. The reflection is the decoration.

Spirits and premium drinksReads as a metal badge on a bottleBrand knocked out to mirror; details on an underbased panel
Cosmetics and fragranceMatches chromed caps and pumpsClear-style layout with small white-underbased text

Polished, satin or brushed?

Polished is a true mirror and the most reflective. Satin silver diffuses the reflection into a soft sheen that reads at every angle and takes small text better. Brushed aluminium has a fine linear grain like a machined plate. Order a sample of each with your own artwork before committing a range to one.
