About Brushed Aluminium Vinyl - Permanent

Brushed aluminium is a 65 micron metallised PVC with a fine brushed-metal grain that is easily mistaken for a real machined metal plate. It is used for control panels, equipment and appliance labels, cosmetic and candle packaging, automotive accessories and wedding stationery, and it looks its best in mono or with solid blocks of colour. Waterproof and UV resistant, it is rated for around five years outdoors.

Our inks are slightly translucent, so colour printed straight onto the brushed surface takes on a metallic tint. For bright, opaque colour, choose white ink under your artwork in the designer and the white is printed first as a base. Unprinted areas keep the brushed finish. The brush direction is set by the label layout on the print run and cannot be guaranteed.

The adhesive is a permanent pressure-sensitive acrylic suited to smooth plastics, metal and glass. It is not as aggressive as our standard vinyl and will not hold on high-silicone or waxy plastics such as ABS, so on those surfaces order a small test quantity first.

Description

Custom brushed aluminium labels & stickers, printed on metallic silver vinyl

Brushed aluminium-effect labels printed in the UK on 65-micron metallised vinyl, supplied on easy-peel sheets with a permanent waterproof adhesive. Full-colour or mono print, any size or shape, from a single label upwards.

Our brushed aluminium labels give you the look of engraved metal at a fraction of the cost. The metallic silver film carries a fine brushed grain that catches the light, so printed asset tags, rating plates and equipment labels read as premium industrial parts rather than a sticker on a machine.

Printed with eco-solvent inks that won’t smudge when wet and hold their colour under UV for years, these waterproof metallic labels work indoors and out. They look their best in crisp mono or with solid blocks of colour, and can pass easily for far more expensive real metal labels.

Every order is custom-made to your measurements and supplied on roughly A4 sheets, or cut individually for a small fee. Design online or upload print-ready artwork, order from one label upwards, and if you want a softer, less shiny look, ask about our satin silver material too.

By approving your proof you accept the following. Colour is reproduced as accurately as possible but cannot be guaranteed to match your screen, a printed sample or a previous order exactly. Differences between rich (full-colour) black and single black, colours sitting near the edge of the CMYK gamut, fine tints and slight variation between materials, finishes and print batches are a normal part of the printing process and may not be visible on your on-screen proof. These are considered within standard commercial print tolerance and are not classed as a fault. Where any question of print quality arises, StickyThings is the final arbiter of whether a job has printed correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Are brushed aluminium labels real metal?

No - they’re printed on a 65-micron metallised PVC vinyl with a brushed silver finish. It gives the look and grain of machined aluminium at a far lower cost, and most people can’t tell it apart from a genuine engraved metal plate.

Are these metallic labels waterproof and suitable for outdoor use?

Yes. They’re printed with eco-solvent inks that won’t smudge when wet, resist UV and are rated for around five years of external weathering, so they hold up indoors and outside. Service temperature runs from -22C to +74C.

What surfaces will the adhesive stick to?

The permanent solvent acrylic adhesive is best on smooth plastics, metals and glass - it looks superb on aluminium containers or straight onto glass. It won’t bond to high-silicon or waxy surfaces such as some ABS plastics, so request free samples if you’re unsure.

Can I order custom shapes and sizes?

Yes. Enter any width and height for a standard shape, or supply a vector cutter guide for a bespoke die-cut, and we’ll cut your brushed aluminium labels to spec and supply them on sheets.

What is the minimum order and can I see the material first?

The minimum is a single label. If you want to check the finish, adhesion and print quality first, order our free samples, which carry our logo, or buy one label as a hard-copy proof of your own design.

How quickly will I get my labels?

Once you approve your PDF proof we get straight to print, typically dispatching within 3-5 working days. For our current production and delivery times, please see our turnaround and delivery page.

Can I choose which way the brushed grain runs?

Yes. The grain runs in one direction across the sheet, and we cut your labels so the grain runs the way you want, usually horizontally along the text so it reads as an engraved plate. Tell us the orientation when you order.

How does brushed aluminium vinyl compare with a real engraved plate?

It costs pence rather than pounds, has no minimum, arrives in days, prints in full colour with variable serial numbers, and is self-adhesive so it follows gentle curves without holes or rivets. Real aluminium wins only for high heat and heavy abrasion; for those, ask for a laminate or a resin dome.

Brushed aluminium guide

The engraved-plate look without the engraving

A brushed aluminium label is a 65 micron metallised vinyl with a fine linear grain in the surface, and from a metre away it passes for a machined metal plate. That makes it the material for rating plates, control panels, appliance badges and any product that wants to look engineered, at a fraction of the cost of etched or engraved aluminium. The grain and the metallic surface both affect how a design prints, so this guide covers designing for the material, where it works, and how it compares with the real thing.

Designing for the grain

  • Run text with the grain. The brushed lines run in one direction across the sheet. Type set parallel to the grain reads as engraved lettering; type across it looks slightly softer. Tell us the orientation you want and we cut the labels to match.
  • Mono and dark colours. Our inks are translucent, so black, charcoal and deep blues print crisply and leave the aluminium showing everywhere else, which is exactly the engraved look. Light colours turn silvery.
  • White ink for true colour. A logo that must be red, or a warning that must be yellow, needs a white ink under-base beneath it. The rest of the label stays brushed metal.
  • Use the metal as a colour. A printed dark panel with the text left unprinted shows the aluminium through as the lettering. On a machine or a speaker it looks like a milled plate.
  • Weights. Rules of 0.5pt or more and type of 6pt or more. Fine lines survive well on this smooth film.

A 70 x 30 mm rating plate. Mono print for the specification, and a dark block with the model name left unprinted so the brushed metal reads as the lettering.

Where it lives

The film's specification is for interior and sheltered use: control panels, appliances, indoor equipment, packaging and display. It is waterproof and UV resistant, so a covered outdoor position is fine, but for plates on plant left in the open or machinery that is pressure-washed, choose the laminated vinyl or ask for the label resin domed.

Where brushed aluminium labels are used

  • Rating and identification plates on electrical equipment, machinery and appliances: model, serial, voltage and conformity marks. See the equipment labelling guide for what a plate should carry.
  • Control panels and switch labels: function names, on/off, port and connector markings on enclosures and consoles.
  • Audio, camera and instrument badges where the brand expects a machined finish.
  • Cosmetics and grooming: brushed metal on black or dark glass is a menswear and premium skincare staple.
  • Automotive and motorcycle accessories, interior trim and detailing badges.
  • Kitchens, joinery and furniture makers' plates inside cabinets and on appliances.
  • Wedding and event stationery for an industrial or modern theme.

The permanent adhesive bonds to painted and bare metal, plastics, glass and coated card. Apply dry to a clean surface at room temperature, squeegee from the centre so no bubbles sit under the metallic face, and allow 24 hours before the item is handled.

Robert H.Very durable with excellent adhesion2 years ago

We've used these labels on our products for 2 years now. They are very durable with excellent adhesion to our steel products. We clean the bonding surface well to get the best adhesion (as recommended for any sticky thing!). Looks like a metal plate at first glance and the printing is usually crisp and high-definition.

The brushed aluminium finish looks very professional and the adhesive is not so aggressive that you can't reposition the labels but once they're in position they stay stuck.
