About Gloss vinyl - High Tack

High tack gloss vinyl is for the surfaces a standard label will not hold. The film itself is a 100 micron white gloss PVC that prints exactly like our standard vinyl: waterproof, scratch and UV resistant, and rated for around three years outdoors. The difference is the adhesive.

It carries an aggressive high tack permanent adhesive designed for low-energy and textured surfaces: polypropylene and polyethylene tubs and bottles, ABS plastic housings, powder-coated metal, bare wood, car bumpers, laptop lids, medals and trophies. It bonds hard within 24 hours and is not meant to come off again, so position it carefully on the first go.

If your surface is smooth glass, metal or coated card, our standard gloss vinyl will hold just as well at a lower price. Reach for high tack when the surface is plastic, rough or slightly oily, or when a previous label has peeled.

Description

Custom high tack labels & stickers, printed on extra-strong self-adhesive vinyl

Extra-sticky high tack labels printed in the UK on 100-micron gloss vinyl with a specially formulated high-tack adhesive that grips low energy plastics, wood and rough metals. Full-colour print, any custom size or shape, from a single label upwards.

These are the stickiest waterproof labels we make. The high-tack adhesive is formulated to bond with awkward low energy surfaces - silicone rubber, ABS and other plastics - where a standard label simply lifts and peels away. If you need a sticker that holds on when nothing else will, this is the one.

Printed on durable gloss PVC with waterproof eco-solvent inks, these extra permanent labels handle both indoor and outdoor jobs. They shrug off water, resist scratching and UV, and keep their grip across a wide temperature range, so they stay put on drums, containers, tools and equipment left out in the yard.

Every order is full colour and cut to your exact measurements, supplied on easy-peel sheets. There’s no set minimum - order one label or several thousand, design online or upload your own print-ready artwork. Not sure the adhesive will suit your surface? Order a free sample and test it first.

By approving your proof you accept the following. Colour is reproduced as accurately as possible but cannot be guaranteed to match your screen, a printed sample or a previous order exactly. Differences between rich (full-colour) black and single black, colours sitting near the edge of the CMYK gamut, fine tints and slight variation between materials, finishes and print batches are a normal part of the printing process and may not be visible on your on-screen proof. These are considered within standard commercial print tolerance and are not classed as a fault. Where any question of print quality arises, StickyThings is the final arbiter of whether a job has printed correctly.

Frequently asked questions

What makes high tack labels different from standard labels?

The adhesive. Our high tack labels use a specially formulated extra-permanent glue designed to bond with low energy surfaces such as silicone rubber and certain plastics, where a standard permanent adhesive struggles to hold. They give a longer-lasting, stronger bond than any other label we produce.

What surfaces will they stick to?

Clean smooth surfaces plus rough and difficult ones - wood, ABS plastic, concrete, rough metals, car bumpers and laptops. They’re built for the awkward low energy surfaces where standard labels lift and peel. If you’re unsure, use our free sample service to test the bond before you commit.

Are high tack labels waterproof?

Yes. They’re printed on gloss PVC with waterproof eco-solvent inks, so they wipe clean and stand up to water, scratching and UV. They suit both indoor and outdoor use, with a service temperature range of -5C to +100C and around three years of external weathering.

Can I order any size or shape?

You can. Enter any width and height for a standard shape, or supply a vector cutter guide for a bespoke die-cut. Labels come supplied on sheets in full colour, and we can trim them individually on request for a small fee.

What is the minimum order?

Just one. Order a single high tack label or several thousand, and the price per label drops as your quantity grows. You can also order a minimum quantity to get a hard-copy sample of your own artwork.

How quickly will I get my labels?

Once you approve your PDF proof we get straight to print. For our current production and delivery times, please see our turnaround and delivery page.

Why do ordinary labels fall off polypropylene and powder-coated surfaces?

Those surfaces have low surface energy, so a standard adhesive cannot spread into them and sits in beads, like water on a car bumper. High tack adhesive is softer and more aggressive, so it wets low-energy and textured surfaces and then sets hard.

Can high tack labels be removed?

Not cleanly. Once bonded they come off in pieces and can lift paint. Use them only where the label is meant to stay for the life of the item; for anything you may relabel, choose our standard permanent or removable vinyl.

High tack guide

Why some surfaces refuse ordinary labels

Peel a standard label off its sheet, press it onto a polypropylene tub or a powder-coated cabinet, and within a day the corners are curling. Nothing is wrong with the label. The surface has low surface energy, and a normal adhesive cannot spread into it. High tack labels use an adhesive formulated for exactly those surfaces. Here is what is going on, and how to get a bond that lasts.

For an adhesive to grip, it has to "wet" the surface: flow out and make contact at a microscopic level. Whether it can depends on the surface energy of the material, measured in dynes per centimetre. Glass, bare metal and coated card sit high, roughly 40 dynes and above, and almost anything sticks to them. Polypropylene, polyethylene, silicone, powder coatings and many textured plastics sit around 30, below the level a standard acrylic adhesive needs, so the adhesive sits on the surface in beads rather than spreading.

You can see the same effect with water. Sprinkle a few drops on a clean car bumper or a plastic tub and they bead up; on glass or a painted door they spread into a film. If water beads, a standard label will struggle too.

A high tack adhesive is softer, more aggressive and flows further, so it wets low-energy and rough surfaces and then sets hard. Ours is a solvent-based acrylic that tests at 22 N per 25 mm on glass after 20 minutes and 28 N after 24 hours, against 13 N and 20 N for our standard permanent adhesive.

Adhesive beading on a low energy surface compared with spreading on a high energy surface Low energy surface polypropylene, powder coat, silicone adhesive beads, little contact High energy surface glass, bare metal, coated card adhesive spreads, full contact Needs high tack Standard adhesive is fine
The same adhesive on two surfaces. On the left it cannot wet the surface and stays in beads; on the right it flows into a film and bonds. High tack adhesive is formulated to spread on the surface on the left.

High tack is not removable

Once bonded, a high tack label comes off in pieces and may take paint with it. Do not use it on anything you intend to relabel, on delicate finishes, or on rented equipment you have to return clean. For those, our standard permanent or removable vinyl is the right choice.

Getting the bond you paid for

  1. Degrease

Wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol and a clean cloth. New plastic mouldings carry mould-release agent, metal carries machining oil, and both stop any adhesive wetting the surface. Do not use a silicone-based cleaner or polish.

  2. Dry and above 10 degrees

Adhesive flows less when cold. Apply indoors or warm the surface first; the label itself should be at room temperature.

  3. Press, then press again

Pressure-sensitive adhesive means exactly that. Rub the label down firmly from the centre out, then go over the edges and any textured area a second time with a cloth or a plastic card.

  4. Wet-apply large panels

For labels over about 150 mm on smooth painted metal, mist the surface with water and a drop of washing-up liquid, position the label, squeegee the water out from the centre. The high tack adhesive tolerates wet application; standard adhesive does not.

  5. Give it 24 to 72 hours

Initial grip is high, but the adhesive keeps flowing into the surface for up to three days. Keep the item dry, unheated and unhandled for the first day.

The material

High tack labels are printed on the same 100 micron white gloss PVC as our standard vinyl, so the print is identical: waterproof, scratch resistant, UV stable and rated for around four years outdoors. The difference is entirely in the adhesive. Service temperature runs from -30 to +100 degrees, which covers freezers, cold stores, engine bays and equipment that runs warm.

Because the film is gloss, the surface takes a permanent marker for adding dates or serial numbers. For labels that will meet solvents or pressure washing, choose the laminated version; for labels that must show if anyone tampers with them, the ultra-destruct film uses a high tack adhesive too.

Stickythings Hi Tack Waterproof Vinyl Labels are a very versatile product. We primarily use them on garden machinery, often abused and left out in all weathers. Years later, they still look good, and we have never found them peeling off in the corners.

Seem to be good stickers and suitable for our purpose.

Anthony B.

Excellent quality, these were exactly what we were looking for. They are to stick to oil boilers so time will tell if they stay on and are not easily removed but from the quality I don't think its going to be an issue.

Good quality and fair price as always

Required some very sticky labels to adhere to a grainy surface that was a specific size. These worked well.
