About Clear Gloss Vinyl - Permanent

Clear gloss vinyl gives the printed-straight-onto-the-product look. The film is a 70 micron transparent PVC with a glossy surface, so your design appears to float on the bottle, jar or window with no visible label edge. It is waterproof, resistant to oil and everyday handling, and rated for several years outdoors.

Because the film is see-through, our inks are printed onto whatever is behind the label: on a white or pale surface colours look as they do on paper, on glass or a dark surface they read as translucent. If you want solid, opaque colour on a clear label, choose white ink under your artwork in the designer and the white is printed first as a base. Labels are cut with a small gap between them and supplied on sheets.

The adhesive is a permanent clear solvent-based acrylic that grabs glass, metal, PET bottles and most smooth plastics. Some low-energy plastics with a high silicone content, such as certain squeezy bottles and tubs, are hard for any label to hold, so if you are labelling those we recommend ordering a small test quantity first.

Description

Clear labels & transparent stickers, printed on clear waterproof vinyl

Custom printed clear labels for that frameless, no-label look on bottles, jars and glass. Made in the UK on see-through waterproof vinyl with a near optically clear gloss finish and a strong permanent adhesive, so only your printed design shows - not the label.

Because the film is transparent, only the ink is visible - ideal for premium branding where you want the product or the glass to show through. Add an optional white ink under-base and your colours stay bright and opaque even on dark backgrounds, coloured glass or clear plastic. Every label is water, oil and UV resistant, so it stays sharp indoors or out without smudging or peeling.

We cut every clear label to the exact size and shape you provide using precise cutting technology, giving you the freedom to choose any custom size you like. All material is in stock, and your see-through labels are produced and dispatched as soon as you approve your proof. Prefer an etched-glass look instead? Take a look at our frosted labels, or for a solid background try our white waterproof labels. The full specification for the material is shown in the designer above when you select it.

Our print guarantee

We print exactly what you approve, matched as closely as we can to your on-screen proof - with a natural tolerance for colour and material differences.

What we guarantee

  • Colour reproduced as closely as possible to your approved proof
  • Sharp, high-quality printing and clean, accurate cutting
  • Any printing, cutting or material fault is on us - we’ll put it right or reprint free

What’s down to you

  • Spelling, wording and layout in your artwork
  • Setting up white ink and clear areas correctly for your design
  • We can’t improve low-quality graphics - upload poor resolution and it will print at poor resolution
  • We print your design exactly as approved, so please check your proof carefully

By approving your proof you accept the following. Colour is reproduced as accurately as possible but cannot be guaranteed to match your screen, a printed sample or a previous order exactly. Differences between rich (full-colour) black and single black, colours sitting near the edge of the CMYK gamut, fine tints and slight variation between materials, finishes and print batches are a normal part of the printing process and may not be visible on your on-screen proof. These are considered within standard commercial print tolerance and are not classed as a fault. Where any question of print quality arises, StickyThings is the final arbiter of whether a job has printed correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Are clear labels completely see-through?

The film is a near optically clear gloss vinyl, so from a short distance it is hard to tell there is a label there at all - only your printed design shows. Any unprinted areas stay transparent and let the surface behind show through, giving that sought-after no-label look.

Will my colours show up on a dark or coloured surface?

Printing inks are slightly translucent, so on dark glass or coloured containers colours can look muted. Add the optional white ink under-base and your design stays bright and opaque - just select it in the options above before you order.

Are they waterproof and durable?

Yes. They are printed on clear waterproof vinyl with long-lasting eco-solvent inks for excellent water, oil, scratch and UV resistance, so they stay sharp indoors or out without smudging or peeling.

Can I order any size or shape?

Absolutely. Set any width and height, choose a rectangle, square, circle, oval or a custom die-cut shape, and we cut to your exact spec. Labels are supplied on sheets, or cut as singles.

What is the minimum order?

Just one. Order a single label or thousands, and the price per label drops as your quantity grows.

How quickly will I get my labels?

Once you approve your proof we get straight to print. For our current production and delivery times, please see our turnaround and delivery page.

Do I need white ink on a clear label?

Only if your design has light colours or white in it, or the container is dark. Dark inks on clear glass work without it; a full-colour logo on an amber bottle or a dark liquid needs a white under-base to stay bright. Pick the White ink swatch in the designer and the preview shows the difference.

Will a clear label look like sellotape on my jar?

No. Both the 70 micron film and the adhesive are optically clear, so the unprinted area disappears on clean, glossy glass. On frosted or textured surfaces any clear film shows as a shiny patch, which is when to choose our frosted etch labels instead.

Clear labels guide

Clear or white: how to decide

A clear label shows the product, not the label. Only the ink is visible, so a logo looks printed straight onto the glass and a bottle keeps its no-label look. That is exactly right for some jobs and wrong for others, and the difference comes down to what sits behind the label and whether your colours need to stay solid.

OptionWhat you seeChoose it whenWatch out for
Clear vinyl, no white inkInk only; anything pale or thin goes translucent against the contentsDark type or a dark logo on clear glass, water bottles, minimalist brandingLight colours and white text vanish; the liquid colour tints your design
Clear vinyl with white inkYour artwork solid and bright, the surrounding film invisibleFull-colour logos on coloured glass, amber bottles, dark liquids, clear plasticSet the white layer correctly (the designer does this for you)
White vinylAn opaque label with a visible edgeMaximum colour punch, ingredient panels, anything that must be read at a glanceThe label edge shows, so the shape matters
Frosted etchA soft, sand-blasted glass effectSpa, drinks and giftware where you want texture rather than transparencyFine detail softens; keep type above 7pt
The quick test

Hold your artwork up against the actual container in daylight. If the design still reads with the contents behind it, clear without white ink will work. If it disappears, you want white ink behind it or a white label.

White ink: the part most clear labels get wrong

Standard printing has no white ink. On white paper or white vinyl that does not matter, because the material is the white. On a clear film every colour is printed as a translucent layer, so yellow on an amber bottle turns orange and a white logo prints as nothing at all.

We solve that with a white ink layer printed underneath your colours. You choose how much of it you want:

  • Full white under-base. White behind the whole design. Colours print exactly as they would on white vinyl, but the unprinted film around them stays invisible. The most common choice for logos and product names.
  • Spot white. White only where you place it, so parts of the design can be solid while others stay see-through, or so white text can print on its own.
  • No white. A deliberate translucent look, best with dark inks on clear glass.

In the label designer, pick the White ink swatch for any element that should print white or sit on a white base, and the preview shows the result against a clear background. If you supply your own PDF, put the white on its own layer as a spot colour named RDG_WHITE; the designer detects it when you upload. Ordinary white in a file does not print on clear vinyl.

The same logo on an amber bottle without and with a white ink under-base GOLDEN HONEY CO Clear, no white ink GOLDEN HONEY CO Clear, white ink under-base
Same artwork, same amber bottle. Without white ink the yellow is tinted by the glass and the white line disappears. With a white under-base the colours print true and the label edge stays invisible.

Designing for a see-through label

  1. Start from the container colour

Design on a background that matches the glass or liquid, not on white. The designer lets you preview against a clear background; a photo of your bottle behind the artwork is even better.

  2. Give thin things weight

Hairlines, light greys and fine serifs lose contrast on glass. Use type at 7pt or larger, strokes of 0.5pt or more, and avoid pale tints unless they sit on white ink.

  3. Decide where the edge is

There is no visible label edge, so the eye reads the ink as the shape. Leave generous space around the artwork, and if you want a defined shape, print it as a shape rather than relying on the cut.

  4. Use rich black for solids

On clear film a single-black area can look slightly grey and translucent. A rich black (roughly 60 cyan, 40 magenta, 40 yellow, 100 black) prints denser. Keep small black text as single black so it stays crisp.

  5. Expect a CMYK conversion

Bright screen colours, especially neon greens and electric blues, print as their nearest CMYK equivalent. Our artwork guidelines explain what changes and how to check a proof.

Where clear labels work, and where they don't

Made for clear labels

  • Glass jars and bottles. Jam, honey, sauces, spirits, cold-pressed juices, kombucha: the product is the design and the label just carries the name.
  • Water and drinks bottles. A clear label on clear PET keeps the bottle looking unlabelled while carrying your brand and the mandatory information.
  • Cosmetics and candles. Dropper bottles, pump bottles and glass jars where you want the contents visible.
  • Window stickers. Opening hours, logos and offers applied to shop glass. For inside-the-glass application the design is mirrored so it reads from outside; ask us when you order or see window stickers.
  • Clear packaging. Cellophane bags, acetate boxes and clamshells, where an opaque label would look like a patch.

Better on white vinyl

  • Dark, textured or coloured surfaces where the design would disappear without a white base anyway.
  • Frosted or etched glass, where a clear label shows as a shiny patch.
  • Ingredient and allergen panels, barcodes and anything that must scan or be read quickly.
  • JarsPreserves, honey, sauces
  • BottlesWater, spirits, juices
  • CosmeticsDroppers, pumps, pots
  • WindowsHours, logos, offers
Dotted outlines mark where the clear label sits. In every case the surface behind it is glass or clear plastic, which is the whole point.

The material: 70 micron clear gloss vinyl

Our clear labels are printed on a 70 micron transparent PVC film with a glossy face and a permanent, clear acrylic adhesive. Both the film and the adhesive are optically clear, which matters: a cloudy adhesive is what makes cheap clear labels look like sellotape. The print is waterproof and resistant to oil and everyday handling, the film is rated for around five years outdoors unprinted, and the construction handles service temperatures from -30 to +110 degrees, so it survives fridges, freezers, hot-fill and sunny windowsills.

  • Gloss finish. The high-shine face keeps the label invisible on glossy glass. On a matt or frosted surface it will show as a shiny patch; that is when to choose frosted etch instead.
  • Adhesion builds over 24 hours. Around half strength after 20 minutes, full bond after a day. Apply, then leave the container alone before filling with anything hot or chilling it.
  • Apply to clean, dry glass between 10 and 60 degrees. Wipe with a little alcohol first; skin oils and rinse-aid residue are the usual reasons an edge lifts.
  • Large panels and windows go on wet: mist the glass with water and a drop of washing-up liquid, position, and squeegee outwards. Small labels go on dry.

The full specification sheet for the clear film is in the Specifications section on this page.
