About Gloss vinyl - Permanent

Our standard white gloss vinyl is the workhorse of the range: a 100 micron white PVC film with a bright, smooth surface that prints sharp, saturated colour and a clean gloss finish. It is fully waterproof, so print will not run or smudge when wet, and the film shrugs off oil, grease, fridges, freezers and everyday knocks. Outdoors it is rated for around five years before the colours start to soften.

This is the material most of our customers choose for product labels, packaging, bottles and jars, logo stickers and general labelling around a workshop or kitchen. If you need to write on a label you can, with a permanent fine-tip marker, which is handy for batch codes and dates.

The adhesive is a permanent solvent-free acrylic. It grips smooth and lightly textured surfaces firmly within 24 hours and is designed to stay put for years. It is not intended for very low-energy plastics such as polypropylene tubs or ABS: for those, look at our high tack vinyl. Labels are supplied on sheets with a gap between each one, so they peel off individually.

Description

Custom barcode labels & stickers, printed on waterproof vinyl

Custom barcode labels printed in the UK on durable waterproof vinyl, with crisp, scannable codes for retail, stock and warehouse use. Supply your own barcodes or sequential numbers, any size on sheets, from a single label upwards.

Our printed barcode labels are made to be read first time, every time. We print your codes in sharp, high-contrast full colour on self-adhesive vinyl, then test that they scan reliably - so your EPOS tills, stock scanners and warehouse readers pick them up cleanly rather than throwing errors at the checkout.

Upload your own barcode artwork or send us a data file for sequential numbers, product codes or asset tags, and we’ll set it out across the sheet for you. Choose a clear or white base, a matt or gloss finish, and a permanent or removable adhesive to match the job.

Because the material is genuinely waterproof and scratch resistant, these labels hold up on cold stores, shipping cartons and equipment without smudging or peeling. There’s no minimum order - order a single test label or several thousand, and design online or upload print-ready artwork.

Our print guarantee

We print exactly what you approve, matched as closely as we can to your on-screen proof - with a natural tolerance for colour and material differences.

What we guarantee

  • Colour reproduced as closely as possible to your approved proof
  • Sharp, high-quality printing and clean, accurate cutting
  • Any printing, cutting or material fault is on us - we’ll put it right or reprint free

What’s down to you

  • Spelling, wording and layout in your artwork
  • Setting up white ink and clear areas correctly for your design
  • We can’t improve low-quality graphics - upload poor resolution and it will print at poor resolution
  • We print your design exactly as approved, so please check your proof carefully

By approving your proof you accept the following. Colour is reproduced as accurately as possible but cannot be guaranteed to match your screen, a printed sample or a previous order exactly. Differences between rich (full-colour) black and single black, colours sitting near the edge of the CMYK gamut, fine tints and slight variation between materials, finishes and print batches are a normal part of the printing process and may not be visible on your on-screen proof. These are considered within standard commercial print tolerance and are not classed as a fault. Where any question of print quality arises, StickyThings is the final arbiter of whether a job has printed correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Will the barcodes actually scan?

Yes. We print your codes in sharp, high-contrast full colour and check the quiet zones and contrast so they read reliably on retail tills, handheld scanners and warehouse readers. If you’re printing a numbered range, send us the data and we’ll set it out correctly across the sheet.

Can I supply my own barcodes or numbers?

Absolutely. Upload finished barcode artwork, or send us a data file of the numbers or codes you need and we’ll generate and lay them out for you. This is ideal for sequential numbering, batch codes, product SKUs and asset tags.

Are barcode labels waterproof?

They are. We print on a waterproof, scratch and water resistant vinyl in either a clear or white base, so codes stay crisp on cartons, packaging, cold stores and equipment without smudging or peeling.

What size and finish can I have?

Any size you need, supplied on easy-peel sheets. Choose a matt or gloss finish and a clear or white material - a white base gives the strongest contrast for scanning, while clear suits labels going onto transparent containers.

What is the minimum order?

Just one. Our lowest order is a single label, so you can order a test print or a full run of several thousand. If you’re unsure which material suits your scanners, order a free sample first to check the finish and adhesive.

How quickly will I get my labels?

Once you approve the PDF proof we send you, we get straight to print. For our current production and delivery times, please see our turnaround and delivery page.

What size does a retail barcode need to be?

An EAN-13 at 100% is 37.3 x 25.9 mm including the light margins, and retailers accept 80% to 200%, so the smallest safe size is about 29.8 x 20.7 mm. Do not shorten the bars to fit, and leave at least 3 mm clear either side.

Can I print a barcode in my brand colour?

Bars must be dark on a light background: black, dark blue or dark green on white. Red, orange and yellow bars are invisible to a scanner, and metallic or patterned backgrounds stop the read. Keep the colour for the rest of the label.

Barcode guide

Choosing the right barcode

A barcode is only as good as its first scan at the till or in the warehouse. Which code you use, how big it is printed, what colours it is printed in and where it sits on the pack all decide whether it reads first time. Here is the working knowledge behind a label that scans.

CodeUse it forWhere the numbers come fromNotes
EAN-13Retail products sold through shops and marketplacesLicensed from GS1 UK. Each product and pack size needs its own number. The code every till in the UK expects. Do not invent numbers; duplicates cause listing rejections.
EAN-8Very small retail itemsGS1, allocated on requestShorter code for packs too small for EAN-13
Code 128Internal stock, assets, shelf and bin locations, despatchYour own numberingCompact, encodes letters and numbers, read by every handheld scanner
QR codeLinks, asset records, phone scanning, marketingYour own contentReads with a phone camera; survives small print and some damage. Not read by most till scanners.

Size, contrast and quiet zones

  • Size. An EAN-13 at 100% is 37.3 x 25.9 mm including the light margins. Retail allows 80% to 200%, so the smallest acceptable is about 29.8 x 20.7 mm. Below that, till scanners struggle. Code 128 and QR codes can be smaller; a QR code of 15 mm reads reliably on a phone.
  • Quiet zones. The blank space either side of the bars is part of the code. Leave at least 3 mm clear on both sides of a linear barcode and around a QR code. Text, borders and edges inside that zone stop the scan.
  • Contrast. Bars must be dark and the background light: black, dark blue or dark green on white. Never print bars in red, orange or yellow; scanners use red light and see those colours as white. Never put a barcode on a metallic, fluorescent or heavily patterned background.
  • Bar height. Do not truncate the bars to squeeze a code in. A short barcode has to be aimed exactly; a full-height one can be swept.
  • Human-readable number. Keep the digits under the bars. When a scan fails, the number is typed in.
An EAN-13 barcode with its quiet zones and minimum dimensions marked 5012345678900> quiet zone quiet zone 37.3 mm at 100%, 29.8 mm at 80% 25.9 mm
An EAN-13 at nominal size. The tinted margins are the quiet zones, and they count as part of the code's footprint: nothing else goes there.
Send us the code as a vector or the number, not a screenshot

A barcode from a screenshot or a JPG has soft edges and the bar widths drift, which is the single commonest reason a printed code will not scan. Supply the barcode as a vector from your generator, or just give us the numbers and we generate it at the right size. We test-scan before the sheets leave.

Placing barcodes on products

  1. Flat is best, one face only

Put the code on a flat area of the pack and never across a seam, fold or edge. One barcode per pack; two visible codes confuse the scanner.

  2. On curves, turn the bars

On a bottle or tin, orient the bars so they run around the curve like ladder rungs, not along it. The scanner then sees every bar at the same distance.

  3. Bottom right, or bottom of the back

Retail convention is the lower right of the back panel. Shop staff and self-scan customers look there first.

  4. Keep it clean and dry

Scratches and condensation defeat a code. Our vinyl labels are waterproof and scratch resistant, so the code survives the chiller, the warehouse and the customer's fridge.

  5. Scan a sample before the run

Order a small quantity first and scan them on your own till or handset. That is the only test that matters.

Sequential numbers and variable data

For stock, assets, shelf locations and tickets, every label carries a different code. Send us a spreadsheet with one row per label and a column for each variable (the number, any text, a barcode value) and a mock-up of the layout, and we print the run with the code and its human-readable number on each label. Sequential numbering can also run from a start number you give us. See numbered labels for the details, or asset labels if the codes are for equipment.

Material

Barcode labels are printed on 100 micron white vinyl, gloss or matt, with a permanent adhesive. Matt is easier to scan under bright shop lighting because it does not reflect the scanner's beam. For labels on polypropylene crates, drums or powder-coated shelving, ask for the high tack adhesive; for labels that meet solvents or heavy abrasion, the laminated version protects the bars.

Retail barcode numbers are licensed from GS1 UK; the size and placement figures above follow GS1's general specifications. Check your retailer's own artwork requirements, which can be stricter.
